Don't shy from reading, and here is why
Not all people realize the value of reading; some might even say it’s boring. Once you’re aware of its significant effects on your health and overall productivity, then you might think twice. Here are seven benefits reading provides you:
1. Works out the brain
- Just like the body needs to be exercised to stay fit and healthy, so does the brain. According to research, reading activates a series of networks and messages in the brain. These networks can be strengthened and enhanced further as constantly reading is done. Another study found that as tension builds up in novels, it stimulates a more significant part of the brain.
2. Slows down brain aging
- In connection with the first point, consistently working out our brain keeps our cognitive functioning intact as we age. There are studies where it was found that senior citizens reading and solving math problems; daily maintain and improve their brain functions.

- Sleeping has become a challenge, especially when screen times have consumed most of our day. Reading before bedtime lets our brain know it’s time for rest.

- People dealing with depression or anxiety can benefit from reading fiction. It was found out that fiction reading makes them feel more emotionally connected and engaged with the characters.

- If I were you, I’d start reading! The findings of a study published in the Social Science & Medicine journal of Yale University were remarkable. It was found that people reading for more than 3.5 hours per week are 23% less likely to die compared to those who don’t.
You might consider reading now that you know the many benefits it provides. What’s important is that you stay consistent! You can always start slow; aim to read at least 10 minutes a day. Once you get the hang of it, amp it up to 20 or 30 minutes.
